Happy Birthday America

This is it.  The unofficial height of summer.  Here in New Hampshire we had some wild storms blow through last night leaving us with clouds, lingering rain and a lot of downed tree limbs.  We survived with minimal issue. I love the fourth of July mostly for the nostalgia of old time parades, lemonade, hot dogs and cherry pie.  New Hampshire is pretty cool as you can still find the small town feel and charm around many corners. This year we will be celebrating by finishing the flooring in the living room.  Let me remind you that when we bought this farmhouse last year, there was old shag carpeting throughout, dark stained pine trim and wainscoting and dingy wallpaper.  The previous owners were smokers so we immediately removed the downstairs rugs and started tearing down wallpaper. We lived with braided rugs thrown over particleboard floors for the last several months. Last fall we painted the den and living rooms from top to bottom.  Even the ceilings got a fresh coat of paint.  The living room ceiling has rough-cut lumber that was stained dark.  That got a fresh whitewash along with the brick hearth. We picked colors from the HGTV colonial color palette from Sherwin Williams. After several coats of Kilz to remove the nicotine stains, we opened up the doorways and put fresh color on the walls. What a transformation. Of course the house has eight rooms and two bathrooms so we still have a long way to go, but I am excited about how things are coming along.

This is the den after we stripped the carpet and wallpaper. You can see the dark wood trim on the windows.

This is another angle of the den.

This is my Honey Bunny taking out those stupid angles in the doorways. I hated those things.

And here is the final result. See, even Gracie is loving the new room.

If I can dig up the old photos of the living room, I’ll post those next time.  For now, happy home improvements to all and I hope you all enjoy a wonderful Fourth of July.
